Winning Isn't Normal

Journal Activity - October 20, 2024

I was going through old files in my classroom this past week and I came across some items my high school cross country coach use to give us as motivation. As I flipped through that file of old papers, one caught my eye. So, I snapped a picture of it and thought I would share it with you all today as your journal activity this week.

WINNING ISN’T NORMAL!

“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

-Mark Twain

JOURNAL ACTIVITY

I want you to think about the following areas in your life. If we compared you to the other people on your team or in your sport as a whole, would you be Elite? Above Average? Average? Below Average?

  • The skill work you put in on a daily basis IN practice.

  • The work you put in during the off-season

  • How curious you are about your sport or activity.

  • The work you are putting into your mental game.

  • Your lifestyle choices with regards to sleep, recovery, fueling your body, & hydrating.

We could easily create a longer list, but as you reflect on each of the areas the question you need to ask yourself is do I look like the crowd or do I stand out in a positive way? You can’t look like everyone else and expect to achieve something better. Because remember WINNING ISN’T NORMAL!
