Weeding the Garden

Journal Activity - February 2, 2025

I read this simple little story a few weeks ago and it has been on my mind a lot.

A man approached a gardener working diligently in his garden and asked “Why do your plants grow so beautifully?”

The gardener replied “I don’t force them to grow, I just remove what stops them from growing.”

My wife has a large flower garden. I don’t enjoy weeding that garden, but I fully understand how important it is to the health of the plants that we are trying to see flourish in our garden.

I think growing our mental game in sports and life is a lot like growing flowers in a garden. If you aren’t intentional about regularly weeding your mental garden, the “weeds” are going to creep in and choke out what we want to actually grow.

JOURNAL ACTIVITY

What is something that is currently part of your life that is stopping you from growing into the person and player that you want to be?

What can you do to remove that thing? If you don’t have full control over that item, how can you reduce its impact?
