Learning from Sequoias
Journal Activity - January 12, 2024
The song “Cathedrals of the Nelder Grove” by Benjamin William Hastings has been a song that has always made me think every time I listen to it. At the end of the song it has a clip from a YouTube video where a scientist is talking about what it takes for a Giant Sequoia to drop its seeds. If you’ve ever seen one of these trees in real life, they are incredible and make you feel very small.
A Giant Sequoia requires intense fire to drop its seeds. Fire that actually kills the Giant Sequoia. This death of one tree creates exponentially more life because of the number of seeds it will drop and scatter in the area. Give the video a watch.
We tower high above our brothers
We reign the sky, but for a time
Alas, we serve beneath the soil
Where our death just makes a way for life"

JOURNAL ACTIVITY
What needs to die in your life so that you can experience an exponential amount of growth? Maybe it’s a habit, a belief you hold about yourself, or time spent with someone who pulls you away from the version of you that you want to be. It might even be something that has served you well for a long time, but now is a hindrance to your growth.
You can't change where you've been
But you have where you are
Every start has its end
But every end is a start
