I Dare to Try!
Journal Activity - June 29, 2025

Just over 71 years ago, Roger Bannister became the first person to break 4 minutes in the mile (1609 meters). Since then almost 2000 other people have also broken that barrier. All of them men. This past Thursday my eyes were glued to the TV as I watched Faith Kipyogen attempt to make history and become the first woman to crack that barrier. Her story will inspire this week’s journal activity.
A little back ground on Faith. In 2023 she set 3 world records on the track. That is an incredible feat. She set the world record in the 1500, the mile, and the 5000. Her world record in the mile is 4:07.64. This smashed the previous world record by over 5 seconds. That is an incredible time drop at an elite level. Check out this video that Nike created about her “Breaking4” attempt.
“I want to achieve more to show other generations that anything is possible.”
On Thursday, with Nike pouring a lot of time, energy, money, and resources into this attempt and in front of millions of people watching live on line she dreamed BIG! She needed to shave almost 8 seconds off her best time ever. The challenge was great. Check out her attempt here.
As you can see from the video, she fell short of that goal. She ran 4:06.42. Did she fail? I don’t think so. When you dream big it isn’t always about actually accomplishing what you set out to accomplish, sometimes it is about helping make others believe that it is possible.
Within my lifetime, I wouldn’t be surprised if I get to see a women break the 4 minute barrier in the mile on the track. Someone was watching today that was inspired to DARE TO TRY!
