Anxiety

Journal Activity - September 15, 2024

“When I see an anxious person, I ask myself, what do they want? For if a person wasn’t wanting something outside of their own control, why would they be stricken by anxiety?”

Epictetus - Greek Stoic Philosopher

Often times when we ANXIETY takes control in our life it is related to being pulled into the future and the worry that ensues when we want to control that future outcome. As Epictetus say’s, it is wanting something, often in the future, that is outside of our control.

An anxious parent, worried about their children. What do they want? A world that is safe. They don’t control that outcome.

An anxious student, worried about an upcoming test. What do they want? A score on that test that validates their view of themself. They don’t control that outcome.

An anxious athlete, worried about an upcoming competition. What do they want? To prove that they belong. They don’t control that outcome.

ANXIETY IN CONTROL

Watch this clip from the movie “Inside Out 2” that features the main character, Riley, experiencing an anxiety attack. Make note of anything that you can connect with, then on to your journal activity for the week!

If you’ve seen the movie, what does Riley want?

She wants to fit in? She wants to make the team? She wants to impress her new coach and new teammates?

Which of the above does she have control over? None of the above!

JOURNAL ACTIVITY

I want you to think about the 3 most common items/scenarios that tend to make you experience anxiety. For each item, answer the following questions:

  1. Why are my insides twisted into knots?

  2. Am I in control of this outcome?

  3. Is my anxiety doing me any good?

Our anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strengths.
