A Lesson from the Shark Whisperer
Journal Activity - July 6, 2025

One of my favorite activities in the summer is to watch documentaries! I am fascinated by the stories they tell and the opportunity they provide to learn something new. This past week I watched a documentary on Netflix called “Shark Whisperer.” This summer is the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie “Jaws.” So the main goal of Ocean Ramsey, who the documentary highlights, is to change the narrative around sharks. She has spent years studying and swimming with sharks. If you have access to Netflix, I recommend watching it. You can check out the trailer here.
As I was watching the documentary, she had a couple of lines that really stood out to me and will be the heart of your journal activity this week.
“Why should I be afraid?”
As she started swimming with sharks, she would constantly ask herself this question. It wasn’t because she shouldn’t be afraid, but really it was about her processing through her emotions related to an activity that should have a healthy amount of fear and respect for some of the apex predators of the ocean.
“Accept the risks. Acknowledge them. Move on.”
She recognizes there is an inherent risk in what she is doing. But to actually do this safely she needed to accept those, acknowledge those, and then move on. There is such wisdom in this statement that you can apply to the things that scare you about chasing the goals you have for yourself.
