Horses are my favorite animals. My dad used to take me to watch live horse racing when I was young. I was mesmerized by the speed and power of these amazing animals as the barreled down the home stretch of a race.

Check out this short clip (53 seconds) from yesterday’s Kentucky Derby, which was won by Golden Tempo who was not among the favorites to win.

Look how far back from the leaders Golden Tempo was. The horse just kept running its race and didn’t at all seem phased by the race the other horses were running. There is a lesson in that for all of us!

One of the things that is used to help some race horses stay focused on their race is that they wear blinders. These block the horses peripheral vision and keep them focused on the race ahead of them.
